A court in Moscow, the Russian capital, on Wednesday sentenced journalist Alexander Nevzorov, described as a «foreign agent» in the country for allegedly spreading «false» information about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, to eight years in prison ‘in absentia’.
Nevzorov was found guilty of deliberately, publicly and «under the appearance of truthful information» spreading false news about the Russian Army, which is currently deployed in Ukraine in connection with the invasion of the country.
The verdict was announced by Judge Yevgenia Nikolaeva, who said that he was also banned from administering Internet resources for four years, according to the Interfax news agency.
The prosecutor’s office had previously asked for nine years in a penal colony for the journalist. However, the defense insisted that the journalist had obtained the information from reliable and publicly available sources.
His lawyers have indicated that they will appeal the sentence, although Nevzorov is already on the Russian government’s wanted list. The case against him was opened in March 2022 and, just a month later, the Justice Ministry labeled him a «foreign agent.»
