Taiwan’s Defense Ministry on Wednesday denounced the incursion of 34 fighter jets and nine ships of the Chinese Army that have approached its air and sea space, as they have been doing repeatedly during the last few weeks.
«34 aircraft and nine vessels have been detected around Taiwan at 6.00 a.m. (local time) today,» reads a statement from the Taiwanese Armed Forces, where they denounce that, of the total, 20 had entered the air defense identification zone southwest of Taiwan.
The Republic of China Armed Forces have been monitoring the situation and have assigned CAP aircraft, Navy vessels and land-based missile systems to respond to these activities.
The escalation of tensions in the region began with the trip to the island by then Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi in August last year.
Taiwan has had an independent government since 1949, but China considers the territory under its sovereignty. The Chinese government’s fundamental policy towards Taiwan has so far been one of peaceful reunification under the «one country two systems» principle.
