U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Philip Goldberg on Wednesday called on the South Korean government to «trust» the U.S. authorities’ «ability to contain» the threat posed by North Korea to the region.
Goldberg sought to dispel growing doubts about the «full readiness» of the United States to defend South Korea against a possible North Korean attack as Pyongyang presses ahead with its ballistic and nuclear programs.
Thus, he stressed that the United States «takes its responsibility as an ally very seriously» and stressed that it is «understandable that there are people concerned about the future.» «I am here today to assure you that you can have full confidence in the United States,» he said, according to Yonhap news agency.
The ambassador also said the U.S. is focused on «engaging in dialogue with all allies to address the concerns of the Korean people.» «We speak often with the administration of President Yoon Suk Yeol, and we believe that our readiness will become more evident,» he said.
