The government of Moldova–formerly a Soviet republic–has urged the Russian authorities to respect its pro-Western leanings and thus abide by its aspirations to join the European Union.
The Moldovan Foreign Ministry has thus rejected recent statements made by the head of Russian diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, who called Chisinau’s change of course «aggressive».
«We would be grateful if all the states of the world, including the Russian Federation, appreciate the choice of our people», said on Thursday the spokesman of the Moldovan Foreign Ministry, Daniel Voda.
Lavrov not only warned of Moldova’s «aggressive» course, but warned that Western powers were turning Moldova into a sort of «new anti-Russia,» just as, he says, has happened with Ukraine.
In this vein, the Russian Foreign Minister also criticized Moldovan President Maia Sandu for being «ready for anything», including a violent resolution of the territorial conflict with Transnistria, a pro-Russian pro-independence region in eastern Moldova.
Moldova received, together with Ukraine, in June last year the status of candidate to join the European bloc, although Brussels urged both countries to undertake the necessary reforms to finally receive EU membership.
The war in Ukraine has prompted Moldova, bordering the western Ukrainian border, to decree a state of emergency that has been in force since February 24, the day the war broke out, and which has been extended this Thursday for another 60 days.
