The Government of Pakistan has «downgraded» access to the information portal Wikipedia for 48 hours and threatened to suspend it permanently after accusing the medium of having been unable to «remove or block blasphemous content.»
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) issued the «demotion» order last Wednesday «given the platform’s wilful non-compliance with the instructions» given by the state regulator.
«In the event of non-compliance,» the PTA warned on its Twitter account, «the platform will be blocked across Pakistan.»
Wednesday’s was the second time since December 2020 that the PTA has taken action after reporting content posted by the platform. On that occasion, the Pakistani authority issued warnings to both Wikipedia and Google for «disseminating sacrilegious content».
