Ukrainian authorities said Friday that Wagner Group owner, Russian oligarch Yevgeni Prigozhin, is «directly responsible for thousands of war crimes» and stressed that they are investigating his role in the conflict, unleashed on February 24, 2022 by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Ukrainian Prosecutor General, Andriy Kostin, has indicated in a message on his account on the social network Facebook that «it is time to put an end to the bloody tour of the Russians, who cover up under the name of a famous composer», before affirming that Prigozhin «has recruited and trained subordinates for use in hostilities on the territory of Ukraine».
«All this has happened with the full support of the current Russian regime,» he said, while recalling that the head of the Wagner Group «openly admits his role in the war in Ukraine and, with the Kremlin’s permission, settles personnel matters through the recruitment of tens of thousands of prisoners.»
Kostin has stated that Prighozin «was convicted of robbery in Russia and to this day is a hero» and part of the «criminal elite of a terrorist regime.» «Ordinary ‘Wagnerians’ will not evade responsibility either, including those who have fled abroad. Prosecutors have already questioned two fighters who are in the European Union (EU),» he detailed.
«I am convinced that, together with international partners, we will ensure thorough accountability of all criminals who came to our land with weapons in their hands, as well as their patrons, who do business with blood. The hammer of justice is always stronger than the sledgehammer of lawlessness,» he reiterated.
