The Italian Prime Minister, Georgia Meloni, on Saturday called for calm after a new day of protests and mobilizations in favor of the imprisoned anarchist Alfredo Cospito, on hunger strike since October to protest the conditions of his imprisonment.
«I ask everyone to lower the tone to a sincere and respectful debate, starting with the members of Brothers of Italy,» the party she herself leads, Meloni said in a letter published by ‘Il Corriere della Sera’.
Cospito has been on hunger strike for more than 100 days in protest against the restrictive conditions of his imprisonment, usually reserved for members of the mafia, drug traffickers or terrorists.
Cospito was sentenced to life in prison for terrorism for a bombing in 2006 and for shooting a businessman in 2012. His case has been the subject of Italian press attention for several days.
In the missive, Meloni has expressed his discomfort for the attention received for this case and for the fact that he was asked about it during his recent visit to Berlin. «The reason why I had not intervened until now is that I was trying not to fuel a debate that I believe is counterproductive for everyone,» he argued.
Cospito’s situation has provoked protests and mobilizations in Italy and also in cities such as Athens, Berlin or Barcelona, to the point that the Government has announced a reinforcement of the security of Italian diplomatic headquarters around the world.
