Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev warned Ukraine on Saturday that if it attacks the Crimea region there will «inevitably» be an escalation of the conflict with the use of more forceful weaponry.
«An attack on Crimea would mean an attack on Russia and an escalation of the conflict,» he has indicated, Russian news agency TASS reports. Kiev should understand that such actions would be met by «an inevitable reaction using any weaponry.»
Medvedev has posted a message on Twitter in English in which he argues that «international law respects the will of the people,» referring to the vote in which the Crimean population approved its accession to Russia.
The referendum, not recognized by the vast majority of the international community, resulted in more than 95 percent support for annexation to the Russian Federation.
