Russian oligarch Viktor Kharitonin has bought the insolvent Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, located in the southwestern German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, for 20 million euros, the DPA agency reported.
The company NR Holding, owned by Kharitonin, has become the airport’s largest shareholder after reaching a sale agreement with the German state of Hesse, which still holds a 17.5 percent stake.
Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, declared bankrupt in the fall, is located between Frankfurty Luxembourg, was a former U.S. military airport that has no rail connection and serves mainly low-cost carriers flying mainly to European destinations.
The airfield’s new major shareholder, Viktor Kharitonin, is not on any European Union sanctions list despite the Russian invasion of Ukraine, according to the agency.
NR Holding had intended to buy it earlier, but was outbid by SWIFT Conjoy, which bought the airport with a notarized contract in June 2022. However, the Frankfurt-based company never paid the purchase price and NR-Holding reappeared as a buyer.
In view of SWIFT Conjoy’s failure to complete the purchase, the German Ministry of Economics and Technology could still examine the sale of the airport to Nürburgring under the Foreign Trade and Payments Act.
