The General Union of Tunisian Workers (UGTT) has accused the country’s president, Kais Saied, of waging a campaign of political persecution against the formation, Tunisia’s largest trade union, in an attempt to evade attention from the failed turnout of the last legislative elections organized for the greater glory of the president and in which barely one in ten registered voters participated.
«The union condemns the finger-pointing discourse that accuses it of seeking political objectives and assures that these maneuvers will not succeed in diverting the union from the national role it has assumed,» the UGTT’s executive body made known after a meeting held this past Friday.
Also, the UGTT «condemns the hate speech and accusations of treason directed at all components of civil society and young people,» as well as attempts by the Saied government to attack «union work, the right to strike and the right to negotiate by decree».
For all these reasons, the union reiterates its request to start a «national dialogue» as «the only way out» of the economic crisis in the country and a political conflict in force since Saied arrogated to himself in July 2021 extra-presidential powers that have led the president to enjoy a virtually omnipotent mandate in the country by emptying the work of Parliament.
«The low turnout in the last elections expresses the displeasure of Tunisians,» adds the UGTT before calling, once again «for general mobilization to confront the campaigns that target it.» Similarly, the union promises new «regional, national and sectoral mobilizations, the details of which will be made known at a later date,» according to the note reported by Tunisien Numerique.
