U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland has announced the first shipment of funds seized from Russian oligarchs to Ukraine after meeting with Ukrainian Attorney General Andrii Kostin at the U.S. Department of Justice headquarters. The amount is $5.4 million, about 5 million euros.
«Today I am announcing that I have authorized the first-ever transaction of Russian seized assets for use in Ukraine. These funds come from the seizure I announced in April of Russian oligarch Konstantin Malofeyev for breach of sanctions,» Garland explained in statements reported by CNN.
The United States seized several million dollars from Malofeyev’s bank accounts in June after announcing sanctions in April «for acting directly or indirectly on behalf» of the Russian government.
«Today I authorized the seized funds to be transferred to the State Department to support the people of Ukraine. Russian war criminals will have no safe haven in the United States,» Garland stressed.
Kostin stressed that the message being sent is very clear. «There will be no immunity or impunity for international crimes,» he asserted. «Today, the transfer of confiscated assets in the amount of $5.4 million to the State Department for reconstruction was authorized,» he revealed.
«We are grateful to the United States for its dedicide efforts and for its support. The Ukrainian people will never forget it,» he added.
