The Georgian judiciary on Monday refused to release former Georgian President Miajil Saakashvhili despite the delicate condition of the former president following a hunger strike and the State’s refusal to provide him with medical assistance.
The Municipal Court of Tbilisi, the capital of the country, has thus rejected the request of Saakashvili’s defense to release the former president or to postpone the sentence against him, according to the newspaper ‘Rezonansi’.
The case of Saakashvili – with Ukrainian citizenship – has gained more notoriety precisely because the Ukrainian Parliament has asked Georgia and the European Union to transfer the ex-president so that he can receive medical treatment abroad.
On the other hand, the Ukrainian authorities, including President Volodimir Zelenski, have denounced the situation of the third president in the history of Georgia, even accusing the State of killing him «live».
Saakashvili, accused of embezzlement and abuse of power during his term in office, was arrested in October 2021 after eight years out of the country. Since then, he has announced several hunger strikes and his family has demanded that he be transferred to a clinic for treatment.
