Iran’s government on Monday pointed to the existence of «diplomatic dynamism» in talks to try to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, damaged after the unilateral exit of the United States in 2018.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Naser Kanani said Tehran applauds «all efforts based on goodwill» and added that «messages are being exchanged at various levels.»
He also pointed out that Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have maintained «regular» cooperation over the last few months, with a view to a possible visit to the country by the agency’s chief director, Rafael Grossi.
In this regard, Kanani stressed that experts from Iran and the IAEA have held negotiations in line with their «routine direct talks», without giving further details, as reported by the Iranian news agency IRNA.
Tehran’s statements come less than a week after Grossi claimed that Iran had secretly modified a facility for the production of highly enriched uranium, in violation of the obligation to inform the agency about such steps.
In response, Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) spokesman Behruz Kamalvandi said the international agency’s report is based on a «mistake» made by an IAEA inspector.
Iran committed in 2015 to limit its nuclear program. In return, Western sanctions on the Islamic Republic of Iran were lifted. However, after the United States unilaterally withdrew from the pact in 2018, Tehran gradually reversed the restrictions. Negotiations to reinstate the nuclear pact have been frozen for months.
