The Russian government said Monday that the director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, will visit Moscow this week, although there is no date for now, amid talks on the creation of a security zone around the Zaporiyia nuclear power plant, located in Ukraine and controlled by Russian forces.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Riabkov said that the talks are «ongoing», although he stressed that he «can confirm» that the visit will take place «this week». «The timetable has not been fully fixed, but everything indicates that the visit will take place,» he said.
Riyabkov also stressed that Russia «counts, as always, on a deeply professional agreement with the IAEA director general,» while confirming that the situation around Zaporiyia will be one of the items on the agenda, as reported by the Russian news agency Interfax.
Russia claimed at the beginning of March 2022, just a few weeks after the outbreak of the war, control of the Zaporiyia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe and, since that date, the scene of continuous clashes between Russian and Ukrainian troops. The IAEA has warned of the danger of clashes around the facilities and has called for a safety zone.
