Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, has called on several European Union bodies, as well as its member states, to put pressure on Georgia to allow the transfer of former Georgian president, also a Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Saakashvili, so that he can receive medical treatment abroad.
The request was approved by 311 deputies out of 450 in a parliament that, as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, has hardly any members of the opposition to President Volodimir Zelenski’s People’s Servant.
At the same time, the Rada’s demands also include a request to the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, the European Commission, as well as the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, to intensify pressure measures against the Georgian government so that it can be addressed.
In recent days the Ukrainian authorities, including Zelenski, have been denouncing the situation of the third president in the history of Georgia, even accusing the State of killing him «live». The advisor to the Ukrainian Presidency, Mikhail Podoliak, went so far as to offer himself to go and look for him.
Saakashvili, accused of embezzlement and abuse of power during his term in office, was arrested in October 2021 after eight years outside the country. Since then, he has announced several hunger strikes and his family has demanded that he be transferred to a clinic for treatment.
