At least three migrants have died from the shipwreck of the boat in which they were traveling near the Greek island of Lesbos, according to a statement from the Coast Guard, which has estimated that more than 20 people are missing.
The emergency services have rescued 16 people alive, but the survivors put the total number of passengers on the boat, which had departed from Turkey, at 41.
The Greek authorities have pointed out that the survivors were not carrying life-saving equipment and the weather conditions in the area are «unfavorable», with strong winds.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimated before this incident at 18 the provisional death toll on this migratory route so far this year. In 2022, at least 376 migrants and refugees lost their lives, the highest figure since 2016.
