The European Union announced on Tuesday that both Serbia and Kosovo accept «in principle» the new European proposal to normalize their relations and, thus, new talks are expected to advance the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina.
This was stated by the special envoy for the Dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, Miroslav Lajcak, after a visit to the region where he met in the last hours with the Serbian President, Aleksandar Vucic, and the Kosovar Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, advancing that the two parties accept the proposal to sit down to negotiate.
«I am glad that Kosovo has now also accepted the proposal in principle. We will continue our discussions at a high-level meeting,» the Slovak diplomat said in a message on social networks.
The next step would be to convene further high-level meetings in Brussels, although European sources avoid confirming an imminent appointment and tell Europa Press that the next round of contacts between the leaders of Serbia and Kosovo will be announced days in advance.
Last October, the EU put on the table a new proposal to achieve progress in the negotiations, an approach that has the backing of France and Germany and seeks to unblock the dialogue between Serbia and its former province and move towards a final agreement.
In this way, European diplomacy hopes to channel the talks to achieve a pact after a decade of negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina, and in this way create a new dynamic in the relations that will lower the continuous tensions that emerge in the north of Kosovo, with a Serbian majority. The good neighborliness of Serbia and Kosovo is key for the security of the entire Balkan region and the EU makes this normalization a condition for further steps towards EU accession of both.
