Iranian authorities have sent a plane to Syria with humanitarian aid for the victims of the earthquakes registered on Monday in southern Turkey, near the common border, which have left more than 4,800 dead in both countries, according to the latest balance sheets.
Iran’s ambassador in Damascus, Mahdi Sobani, has conveyed his condolences to Syria and stressed that the plane is carrying 45 tons of food, sheets, tents, medicines, medical supplies and other materials in what he described as «the first package» of aid from Tehran.
Sobani also stressed in statements to the Syrian state news agency SANA that the aid will be sent immediately to the affected areas, while revealing that a second plane will arrive on Tuesday at Aleppo airport and a third will arrive at Latakia airport.
Hours earlier, Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Bassam Sabbagh, had called on the international community to «extend a hand of solidarity to support the Syrian government’s efforts to cope with the humanitarian disaster, especially with regard to the search for survivors and the rescue of those trapped under the rubble.»
The earthquake has caused more than 3,380 deaths in Turkey, about 770 in the areas of Syria controlled by the government of Bashar al-Assad and another 780 in rebel-held areas of Idlib and Aleppo (northwest) provinces, according to various balances published during the last hours.
