The North Korean government on Tuesday promised «expanded and intensified» military exercises to ensure the country’s readiness for war.
Senior North Korean military officials have outlined military targets for 2023 at a meeting led by the country’s leader, Kim Jong Un, and coming days after the United States and South Korea conducted joint air drills.
«A series of practical tasks were studied and discussed to bring about a major change in military and political work, including the issue of taking a step for the machinery to fundamentally improve and strengthen military affairs,» reads a government statement carried by the KCNA news agency.
They have also stressed «the issue of constantly expanding and intensifying the operation and combat drills (…) to cope with the prevailing situation and further perfect the war preparedness,» the missive continues.
This meeting was held a day before a military parade is to be held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the North Korean Army, an event that Seoul sees as an occasion to demonstrate military strength, according to the South Korean Yonhap news agency.
