The U.S. Department of Justice has reported that two neo-Nazis have been indicted for planning the «complete destruction» of the city of Baltimore through power plant attacks and other types of bombings.
The defendants are a neo-Nazi leader, Clint Russell, and his partner, Sarah Beth Clendaniel, who «conspired against the energy infrastructure» of this Maryland town for «extremist, ethnic or racial» reasons, as indicated in court documents to which CNN has had access.
«They were conspiring to inflict maximum damage to the electrical system,» explained Tom Sobocinski, who heads the FBI’s Baltimore office. «The defendants were not just talking about this, they were taking steps to further their extremist agenda,» he said.
The charges have been filed as experts warn of increased terrorist plots to attack electrical facilities. The FBI has obtained both audio recordings and documents in which Clendaniel made references to Hitler, Ted Kaczynski, known as Unabomber, and the perpetrator of the 2011 bombings in Norway, Anders Breivik.
Authorities believe that prior to preparing attacks in Maryland he had plotted to attack facilities in Florida.
