British intelligence services have assessed that Russian forces are relying on unmanned and inexperienced units to «achieve unrealistic objectives», acting more out of «political pressure» than the real possibility of continuing to gain ground on the front lines.
UK experts believe that Russia has been trying since early January to regain the initiative with a major offensive, mainly with a view to recapturing the territories escaping its control in the Donetsk region.
However, they are barely gaining «several hundred meters of territory per week». British intelligence has blamed this on the fact that «Russia lacks ammunition and the units required to launch successful offensives», although it has also taken it for granted that Moscow will not relent in its efforts to reclaim its troops «extensive advances».
«It remains unlikely that Russia will be able to build up the forces necessary to substantially affect the outcome of the war in the coming weeks,» he added, even though senior Ukrainian officials have warned of the possibility of new operations coinciding with the first anniversary of the invasion.
