U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday called on Congress to approve his tax plan to raise taxes on large corporations, arguing that they made large profits during the pandemic and did not pay income taxes.
«Under my plan, we will finally be making the richest and largest corporations start paying their fair share. Let’s finish the job. Pass my proposal for a minimum tax,» the president told U.S. congressmen during his State of the Union address.
Biden recalled that during 2020, 55 of the largest companies in the United States earned 40 billion dollars (37 billion euros) in profits and paid «zero federal income tax», a fact that he described as unfair.
In this sense, the US president has assured that he ran for office to make sure that the economy «works for everyone» and to build «a bottom-up, middle-out economy».
«Because when the middle class does well, the poor do well and the rich do very well,» said Biden, defending his imposition of a positive rate for the great fortunes of 15 percent.
«Thanks to the law I signed, multi-billion dollar companies have to pay a minimum of 15 percent. Only 15 percent. That is less than what a nurse pays. Let’s be clear,» he reiterated, reiterating before Congress his request to approve a tax package that would increase taxes on the richest.
