The Australian authorities have reported that they will remove Chinese-made cameras from several headquarters and facilities of the Ministry of Defense because of the possibility that they may be used for espionage activities by the Asian giant, with which Canberra has a tense relationship.
The country’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, Richard Marles, has ordered an analysis of the technology produced by the Chinese companies Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology and Zheijiang Dahua Technology, as he explained in an interview with ABC.
«These cameras are going to be removed from wherever they are. There is a problem and it has to be solved,» he said. These two companies have been accused by senior U.S. officials of being involved in population surveillance in China’s Xinjiang region, where nearly one million Uighur Muslims are held in detention camps.
However, China has denied these accusations as the international community warns about the human rights situation in the country, especially in the northwest region.
