Belarusian authorities said Thursday that their forces shot down a drone that crossed the border from Ukraine in the Stolin region on Wednesday and said the aircraft was used for reconnaissance in the country.
The Belarusian State Border Committee said that guards deployed in the area spotted the drone and shot it down with an electronic weapon, before indicating that the drone was equipped with a video camera, as reported by Belarusian state news agency BelTA.
He also stressed that the inspection of the drone’s memory card confirms that it was launched from the Ukrainian territory and that it recorded in the border area, therefore he emphasized that the incident is under investigation. The incident is the fourth of its kind since November 2022, according to Belarusian authorities.
Belarus, an ally of Moscow, has allowed the deployment of military personnel on its territory to support the Russian military offensive against Ukraine, unleashed on February 24, 2022 on the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Ukraine, in fact, considers Belarus a party to the conflict and fears that Minsk is looking for some kind of excuse to intervene openly.
