Brazilian intelligence alerted Lula’s government of possible attacks on institutions before January 8

Brazil’s Brazilian Intelligence Agency (ABIN) has submitted a report to Congress stating that the new government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was notified of the possibility of violent attacks two days before the assault on the headquarters of the three branches of government on the Esplanade of the Ministries on January 8.

In the report, ABIN detailed that several calls had been registered in several states with the purpose of concurring all of them in Brasilia and in which «demonstrators with access to weapons» would participate and whose «manifest intention» would be to invade the Congress, details ‘O Globo’.

«Other buildings in the Esplanade of the Ministries could be the target of violent actions», deepens a report with the signature of the general in reserve Marco Gonçalves Dias, then head of the Security Cabinet (GSI), on which the ABIN depends, and sent last January 20 to the Intelligence Commission of the Congress.

The alert issued by the ABIN was sent to about fifty state agencies, among them the Ministries of Defense, Civil House and Justice, in contrast with the declarations of President Lula, who reproached the Intelligence services for not having prevented the attacks.

«We have intelligence in the GSI, the ABIN, the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, none of them could really warn the President of the Republic about what could have happened», Lula wondered in an interview with Globo.

These new revelations reinforce the intentions of some in Congress to set up a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) to purge responsibilities among the ministers of Lula’s recently inaugurated cabinet.

«There must be investigations about omissions of the Federal Government in this case (…) The blackout registered in the Federal Intelligence is undeniable. Brazil needs to investigate the totality of what happened on the 8th in relation to the demonstrators and the Government», demanded bolsonarista senator Esperidiao Amin.

In the same interview, Lula ruled out setting up an ICC because «it will not help», since there is nothing to investigate in a commission that cannot be investigated now. «We are already investigating, we have 1,300 people in jail, what can we gain with an ICC?» he asked then.

However, it was not only the ABIN that warned of possible risks as the Bolsonarista camps from which the protests against the government elected at the polls continued without being dismantled, as on the same day of the attacks the Police warned the Ministry of Justice of possible «hostile actions and damage» to the headquarters of the three branches of government.

Who also reproached Lula’s Government for the failure of that day was the interim governor of the Federal District, Celina Leao, who gave an interview to ‘Folha de Sao Paulo’ in which she apologized to the Government of the capital and to her predecessor in the position she holds, Ibaneis Rocha: «He was misinformed».

«All the blame came to us. There were failures in the GSI (…) Failures in the Intelligence of other institutions itself. So it has to do not only with us, it happened in a generalized way, but who was more punished, for sure, was the DF Government», Leao apologized.
