Bulgaria warned Thursday that it will not accept measures against the nuclear sector in the framework of the tenth package of sanctions against Russia over the war in Ukraine, assuring that «if necessary» Sofia will veto this new round of sanctions.
«We cannot accept sanctions in the nuclear field because they will directly affect Bulgaria’s nuclear energy,» Bulgarian President Rumen Radev said in remarks ahead of the summit of heads of state and government that hosted Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski, with whom he discussed military support and new sanctions planned by the EU for the first anniversary of the Russian invasion.
«When Bulgaria’s national interests are at stake, we must be very careful. If necessary, we will veto the package,» the leader insisted. After a year of war in Ukraine, the Bulgarian president has stated that «it is time to put the focus on resuming diplomatic efforts and strive to find a peaceful solution.»
Radev pointed out that the country will continue to support the «legitimate efforts of the Ukrainian people on the ground» and the refugees fleeing the conflict but at the same time demanded that the EU use «all available tools» to lead the discussion towards a diplomatic solution.
Following Zelenski’s participation in the European summit, the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, announced that she will present in the coming days her proposal for the tenth package of sanctions, with a view to measures against Russian military leaders and politicians, Russian propaganda media and new export bans to damage the military capacity of its Army. The nuclear sector has been one of Ukraine’s targets, insisting that Russia maintains its nuclear blackmail of Europe.
