Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva heads to the United States on Thursday for a meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden at the White House on Friday to «restart» diplomatic relations that have run aground during the last part of Jair Bolsonaro’s term in office.

«Good morning, today I set course for the United States, where I will meet with President Joe Biden at the White House. We want to build alliances and growth between our countries for the development of our region, discuss actions for world peace and against fake news,» Lula wrote on his Twitter profile.

Lula’s trip to Washington takes on a new perspective after the events of January 8, when a disgruntled mob of Jair Bolsonaro supporters attacked the headquarters of the three branches of government in Brasilia. These events were reminiscent of those on Capitol Hill in early 2021.

Both defeated in the polls far-right rivals who from the beginning of the election sought to sow doubts about the reliability of the respective electoral systems of their countries, and who have a broad base among their followers who do not hide their advocacy of taking power by force.

Before meeting this Friday, both had already had the opportunity to speak by telephone on two occasions; the first one after Lula’s victory in the elections last October 30 and the second one, a day after the Esplanade of the Ministries was assaulted.

In his first trip outside Latin America after assuming the Presidency after visiting Argentina and Uruguay, he will be accompanied by the First Lady, Rosângela ‘Janja’ da Silva, as well as by the Ministers of Economy, Fernando Haddad; of Environment, Marina Silva; and of Racial Equality, Anielle Franco.

The trip, which will be followed by those to China and Portugal in the coming months, will hopefully serve to «restart» diplomatic relations between the two countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained this week, after the isolation imposed on Brazil by Bolsonaro, who was criticized by Washington for his environmental policies.

This environmental issue will be one of the topics to be discussed, as well as other development policies on energy transition, human rights and the fight against poverty, according to government sources, according to the G1 portal.
