Former Russian president and current deputy chairman of the country’s Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, has described it as «natural» for Russia to increase its arms production in response to the arsenal supplied by Western powers to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
«We are talking about the production and modernization of thousands of tanks,» Medvedev said during a visit to a transport engineering plant in the city of Omsk, in the south-central Eurasian country bordering northern Kazakhstan, reports TASS.
Medvedev thus alluded to recent requests by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for Western powers to supply fighter jets to the country. «Our enemy asked for planes, missiles and tanks while abroad, what should we do in response?» the senior Russian official questioned.
Medvedev then answered himself and asserted that «it is clear» that the «natural» step Russia should take is to «increase the production of various types of weapons and military equipment, including modern tanks.»
After getting Germany to unblock the supply of Leopard tanks, and after the United States guaranteed the shipment of Abrams battle tanks, the Ukrainian authorities have now set their demands on combat aircraft.
In fact, this is one of the main issues discussed by Zelenski during his visit to Brussels in the framework of the European Union summit. Although the Ukrainian leader has made his request to the majority of EU leaders, he has received no guarantees that they will take the step of supplying fighter jets.
