The Nicaraguan government has authorized the release of more than 200 political prisoners and their departure early Thursday morning on a plane to the United States, as announced by several opposition activists.
In total, 213 prisoners have been released, according to Nicaraguan journalist Tifani Roberts, who currently resides in the United States. The government transferred all of them on Wednesday night to the El Chipote prison, from where they were evacuated in the early hours of the morning to the airport.
The authorities have not clarified the identities of the prisoners who benefited from these releases, also confirmed by activist Berta Valle, wife of politician Felix Madariaga, according to the newspaper ‘La Prensa’.
The director of the NGO Amnesty International for the Americas, Erika Guevara Rosas, has celebrated these releases, even though they are people who «have been sent into exile». «They were imprisoned for defending Human Rights and raising their voices against a ruthless regime,» she stressed on Twitter.
