U.S. considers new measures to deport third country migrants to Mexico

The United States is considering the possibility of deporting to Mexico migrants coming not only from that neighboring country, but also from other nations, especially Central American, who try to cross the border in an attempt to contain a migratory flow that has increased since the arrival of Joe Biden to the White House.

This has been assured to CNN by two sources from the Security Department in exchange for confidentiality. Until now, the Biden Administration has resorted to limit these arrivals to Title 42, an order issued by Donald Trump that took refuge in the pandemic crisis to close the passage to thousands of people.

This deportation process is an «expedited solution» at a time when thousands of people continue to arrive at the southern border of the United States and legal processes are piling up to defend the end of this measure once the health emergency caused by the coronavirus has ended.

Until now the southern neighbor has been receiving non-Mexican migrants based on this Title 42 and previously by the measure known as ‘Remain in Mexico’, which the Biden Administration repealed, but had to activate on one occasion after a court ruling following Republican maneuvers.

However, this would be the first time Mexico would agree to receive large-scale deportations of third country nationals. According to these sources, talks between the two are already underway.

Despite these statements, another third source from the Department of Homeland Security has assured the aforementioned media that they are not considering mass deportations of non-Mexicans to Mexico and that the objective is to «continue working closely» with the Mexican authorities to implement their «successful border plan».

Washington has used the so-called Title 42 to send mainly Cuban, Nicaraguan and Venezuelan citizens to Mexico, since U.S. legislation greatly restricts the deportation of those with these nationalities due to diplomatic tensions with these countries.

At the same time, the United States implemented a procedure so that people from these three countries plus Haiti could legally apply for entry from their place of origin. Although this measure was well received by groups defending the rights of migrants, it was also questioned due to the administrative obstacles it entailed.
