Belarusian authorities on Friday criticized Poland’s decision to close the Bobrowniki border crossing point and warned that it could lead to a transport collapse on both sides of the border.
The State Border Committee has indicated that «the Polish authorities have closed since 2020 the channels of international communication under various pretexts» and stressed that «as a reason for these decisions, only three of the six checkpoints are operational».
He stressed that «this situation negatively affected the situation on both sides of the border and led to protests by Polish truck drivers», before stressing that this new closure has made the situation «catastrophic», as reported by the Belarusian news agency BelTA.
«The decision of the Polish authorities to close another international communication channel is aimed at worsening the situation on the border and limiting the travel of citizens of both countries, rather than improving public safety,» he concluded.
For his part, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the decision could cause «difficulties» and stressed that «the needs are being analyzed», as reported by the Russian news agency Interfax.
«It makes sense to contact the Ministry of Transport to get information on how much cargo has been transported through this crossing so far. It needs to be analyzed before determining the next steps,» he said.
The closure was announced by Poland’s Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski, who claimed that the measure had been taken «in the interests of state security». However, he did not specify the cause of the closure of the border crossing, although it is part of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has put the countries in the area on alert.
