The Peruvian Congress has agreed this Thursday to file a constitutional accusation against former President Martin Vizcarra and former ministers Maria Antonieta Alva and Elizabeth Hinostroza for allegedly committing corruption offenses related to the irregular purchase of COVID-19 serological tests.
With 102 votes in favor and eight abstentions, the Andean Parliament has approved the final report recommending the filing of a constitutional complaint for the purchase of 1.4 million rapid tests that did not meet «the required standards» to diagnose with certainty the coronavirus, as reported by RPP radio station.
As a result of the vote, the case will be brought before the Subcommission of Constitutional Accusations (SAC) where, if found responsible, a maximum sanction of disqualification from public office of up to ten years could be imposed.
The former Peruvian President Martín Vizcarra, as well as the former Minister of Health Elizabeth Hinostroza and the former Minister of Economy María Antonieta Alva, allegedly met with representatives of the health sector and private companies in order to «agree on the acquisition of serological tests», contrary to the health policies then in force which did not recommend the use of this type of tests to detect COVID-19.
The report approved by Congress states that Vizcarra and the former ministers knew that the serological tests «did not meet the required standards», as reported by the aforementioned radio station.
VIZCARRA ASSURES THAT TIME WILL PROVE HIM RIGHT After learning of the decision of the Andean Parliament, former President Martin Vizcarra said that «time and justice» will prove him right, as he said in a message on the social network Twitter.
«A Congress with 90 percent of rejection, which does not listen to the clamor of the population to advance the elections, is only concerned with continuing its political revenge. As is already happening in other cases, time and justice will prove me right, because I have acted by putting Peru First,» he has stated.
