The President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, has conveyed to his Polish counterpart, Andrzej Duda, Kiev’s defense «needs» in the face of the Russian invasion during a meeting in Warsaw as part of his return trip to the country after official visits to London, Paris and Brussels.
The Ukrainian Presidency has indicated in a communiqué that Zelenski has informed Duda of «the current situation on the front and the forecasts on its development in the next period», before stressing the need to «strengthen» the Ukrainian Army to face the Russian troops.
«The leaders discussed cooperation at the defense level and joint diplomatic steps,» he said, before stressing that the Ukrainian leader has conveyed to Duda «the importance of starting negotiations this year on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union (EU),» which «would be an important motivation for the Ukrainian society and the Ukrainian Army, which are facing difficult challenges.»
For its part, the Polish Presidency has indicated that the talks focused on Zelenski’s «diplomatic activity» in Brussels and other European capitals and on «diplomatic activities planned for the future», including agenda preparations for the upcoming NATO summit in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.
«Duda will meet next week with NATO Secretary General (Jens Stoltenberg), so this exchange of views and information between the presidents of Poland and Ukraine in the context of these activities is very important,» Minister for the Polish Presidency Martin Przydacz said in a statement published on his website.
Warsaw also indicated that the leaders also discussed «the current situation on the front line and the security situation in the region, as well as the need for further joint efforts to provide military support to Ukraine to fight Russian aggression». Duda and Zelenski also discussed issues related to the imposition of new sanctions on Moscow.
