The European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, on Saturday called for protection for the bloc from the «industry of lies» set up by Russian President Vladimir Putin to distort reality about the war in Ukraine.
«Putin not only started the war, he also created a powerful manipulation industry to prevent people from understanding what is really going on, to make them doubt everything and blame themselves,» the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy has indicated.
«The Kremlin’s information manipulation efforts are global and operate on an industrial scale. It is a crucial instrument of this war,» he added.
Against this, Borrell reminded that the European Union has introduced «restrictive measures against the Kremlin’s deception industry» through the suspension of «propaganda media acting against international ethical code of journalism».
«Real, professional and independent journalism is and always will be protected within the EU. And we will continue to support it everywhere in the world,» added Borrell, who nevertheless took the opportunity to call for an «even more defined and flexible» response and better analysis of the flow of information in order to act more effectively.
