The Vice President of Colombia, Francia Marquez, proclaimed Friday that it is unfair that Cuba is part of the U.S. list of countries that support terrorism, expressing her support for Havana to be removed from it.
«It is not fair that a country like Cuba, which has contributed so much to peace in Colombia, is part of the list of countries that support terrorism. Today, from Havana, I express my support to this island nation to be removed from the list,» said the ‘number two’ of President Gustavo Petro in a message on the social network Twitter.
Hours earlier, Marquez highlighted the «historic relations» between Cuba and Colombia, all this after meeting in the Cuban capital with President Miguel Diaz-Canel.
The designation of countries sponsoring international terrorism is applied by the U.S. State Department to countries that Washington considers as collaborators of terrorist organizations and entails an accumulation of strong sanctions.
Specifically, this designation implies that «the sale or license to export defense articles and services» to these nations is prohibited, in addition to the fact that with it «the United States notifies its citizens and the international community that these countries are not cooperating fully» in the fight against terrorism.
Currently, in addition to Cuba, Syria, Iran and North Korea are the countries that make up the list of countries sponsoring terrorism drawn up by the United States.
