Iranian authorities have released on bail journalist Elnaz Mohammadi, who was arrested a week ago, according to the Ham-Mihan media, of whose editorial board the reporter is a member, on Sunday.
Mohamadi is the sister of Elahe Mohamadi, who was arrested in September 2022 for reporting on the death in custody of young Kurdish-Iranian woman Mahsa Amini for allegedly wearing the Islamic headscarf incorrectly.
Amini’s death became the trigger for the most serious popular protests recorded in years in the country. According to NGOs, between 400 and 500 protesters have been killed since the protests broke out.
The media shared on its Twitter account an image of the journalist while her sister is still behind bars since September 16.
According to the Tehran Journalists Association, ten journalists are still imprisoned in connection with the protests sparked by Amini’s death.
Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country’s supreme leader, last weekend ordered an amnesty for thousands of prisoners on the occasion of the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, and some of these pardons have gone to participants in the protests.
