The Peruvian Minister of Defense, Jorge Chávez Cresta, has celebrated this Sunday the total liberation of the National Road Network from Tumbes to Tacna, on the coast of the country, which was blocked by anti-government protests and preventing the supply to the populations.
«The area of Chao (La Libertad), in Ica, in La Joya (Arequipa) was freed and that has allowed the road network of the Panamericana Sur, in its entirety, from Tumbes to Tacna», confirmed the head of Defense in declarations collected by the Andina news agency, an operation that will guarantee from now on the supply of fuel, food and freedom of transit to the affected communities.
Furthermore, Chévez Cresta has reiterated that the Executive will continue with the actions to unblock the roads, a joint work between the Ministries of Defense and Interior with the support of the Armed Forces.
As reported by the aforementioned agency, the Minister of Defense has pointed out that some regions are still blocked, a situation which he expects to be resolved throughout this weekend in order to completely free the road network.
Regarding the work of the Armed Forces, the Minister of Defense has underlined that «the forces of order do not go with the intention of going towards a confrontation» but that they carry out actions of dissuasive character for the process of unblocking the roads, which «will not stop until not a single road is blocked».
At the end of January, the Peruvian Ministries of Interior and Defense confirmed the beginning of the process of unblocking the roads of the National Road Network which is in a state of emergency due to the protests against the Government.
Peru is in the midst of a deep political crisis following the dismissal by Congress of former President Pedro Castillo, who announced on December 7 the dissolution of the Andean Parliament and the establishment of an emergency government.
Following the arrest of the former president, tens of thousands of people came out to protest in various parts of the country to demand the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, the dissolution of Congress and the urgent calling of presidential elections. Since then, more than 60 people have lost their lives in riots between demonstrators and security forces.
