Polish President Andrzej Duda has confirmed that, at the request of his Ukrainian counterpart Volodimir Zelenski, the Polish Army has started training Ukrainian soldiers in the use of Western tanks.
According to Duda, the training will last more than a month and Ukrainian soldiers will take part in several stages of training. He also detailed that the trainings are conducted not only by Polish soldiers, but also by Canadians and Norwegians.
In addition to training in the use of Western tanks, the Polish president informed that the Ukrainians will also receive proper instruction in handling Polish weaponry, such as anti-aircraft missile launchers and howitzers.
In the same vein, Duda has encouraged allied countries to send Leopard tanks to Ukraine as soon as possible. «We want the whole armored brigade to be assembled,» said the Polish president, according to the PAP news agency.
For his part, the Polish Minister of Defense, Mariusz Blaszczak, acknowledged that the main challenge for the country is to ensure the supply of spare parts for the Western tanks to be delivered to Ukraine.
In fact, Blaszczak has advanced that at the next meeting of the Contact Group for Ukraine, scheduled for this Tuesday, the supply of tanks to the Ukrainian Armed Forces will be addressed. «We must stop the development of the Russian empire,» he said.
