The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, did not attend this Monday to an occasional commission of the Ecuadorian National Assembly to render accounts and give his version on the complaint that links a family member to an alleged corruption scheme.
The president’s lawyer Jossueth Almeida justified the president’s absence by claiming that he already had activities in his agenda planned in advance, which is why he did not attend the hearing investigating the ‘Encuentro’ case, in which one of his brothers-in-law is accused of leading an alleged corruption scheme in public companies in the country, as reported by ‘El Comercio’.
Lasso’s absence has generated annoyance in the president of the occasional commission, Viviana Veloz (UNES, the formation of former president Rafael Correa).
Veloz has assured that in this case political responsibilities could be found against the president, since there are crimes such as concussion, embezzlement of public funds, money laundering and organized crime. «At this moment the investigation has not yet culminated, but the Ecuadorian people will know them,» he said, as reported by ‘Primicias’.
The alleged corruption scheme, brought to light by the newspaper ‘La Posta’ through leaked audios attributed to Leonardo Cortazar, Lasso’s brother-in-law, points out a structure created by himself with which he allegedly received bribes from suppliers of the Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (Celec) and Nacional de Electricidad (CNEL).
Likewise, a report of the Ecuadorian National Police revealed on Monday points out the relationship of a senior official of the government of President Guillermo Lasso with the so-called Albanian mafia.
The investigation concludes that the President’s government would have links with the Albanian mafia, through Ruben Cherres, who would be the main operator of Danilo Carrera, as reported by Telesur.
So far, however, no further details are known on how the alleged Albanian mafia would have influenced the decisions of the Executive.
INDIGENOUS ASSOCIATIONS CALL FOR LASSO’S RESIGNATION The president of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE), Leonidas Iza, has asked the Ecuadorian president to «step aside» and withdraw from the government, after pointing out contradictions of the president.
«Guillermo Lasso filled his mouth calling those of us who have been critical «narcos». But now with what has been revealed in the case of El Gran Padrino, which shows the infiltration of the mafia in the upper echelons, he would set up a narco-government,» said Iza in a message on the social network Twitter.
Likewise, the leader of the indigenist organization has maintained that Ecuador «does not deserve this», reason why he has asked Lasso to «step aside».
