Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday linked the country’s exit from the European Convention on Human Rights and, by extension, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), to the fact that the court is «politicized,» something Moscow considers «unacceptable.»
Thus, he recalled the country’s dissociation from the ECtHR and defended that the reasons were «obvious» given that the court’s resolutions «were not objective», according to information gathered by the TASS news agency.
«Some verdicts of this court became political,» he has asserted before adding that «this politicization has existed for a long time, but now it has simply become unacceptable.» «It is something that cannot be tolerated at the judicial level in any case,» he has pointed out.
In this regard, he has explained that, consequently, «several federal laws were adopted in accordance with the decisions of the ECtHR.» «I am confident in the ability of the Russian courts to protect the rights of its citizens,» he continued, although he assured that he «will not hide».
«In the end, in my opinion, our judicial system, with our mechanisms, is capable of resolving these issues (…) It is clear that in any system there are issues that deserve special attention, but to do everything necessary in the interests of citizens you have to use the mechanisms at hand,» he concluded.
