Russia’s Armed Forces have begun deploying nuclear-armed ships to the Baltic Sea, a milestone not seen in three decades, according to a Norwegian intelligence report, which also includes the dispatch of submarines.
These would be ships of the Northern Fleet, which in the Cold War era already sailed with atomic weapons to account for the weapons potential of the defunct Soviet Union. Norway has no record of modern Russia ever having resorted to such deployments, according to the study cited by Politico.
The Nordic country’s intelligence recognizes that Moscow «deliberately» stirs up fears of a possible nuclear attack, arguing that it would be ready to use it if it were threatened by external actors, in particular those linked to NATO – a bloc of which Norway is a member.
These capabilities remain practically intact in a context marked by the loss of equipment and personnel as a consequence of the military offensive launched on Ukraine almost a year ago, according to the report published on Tuesday, which warns of a possible escalation of tensions involving the Atlantic Alliance.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has verbalized the threat of using nuclear weapons, although he has always claimed that he would never act in the first place, in line with the theoretical doctrine that Moscow still upholds today to limit their use.
