The UK Government estimates that Russia has committed «97 percent» of its Armed Forces’ capabilities to the offensive launched almost a year ago on Ukraine, where Russian troops had reached «levels of attrition» almost comparable to those of World War I.
All this, according to the British Minister of Defense, Ben Wallace, to achieve progress measured «in meters rather than kilometers» and in a context in which Ukraine is demanding more sophisticated and useful equipment from its international partners, including the United Kingdom.
«If 97 percent of the Russian Army is now engaged in Ukraine, with a very, very high level of attrition, a combat capability reduced to 40 percent and almost two-thirds of its tanks destroyed or broken, all of this has a direct impact on the security of Europe,» Wallace told the BBC.
Helping Ukraine «defeat» Russia, he added, also increases the UK’s security. In this regard, he ruled out that increasing collaboration with Ukrainian forces would lead to shortfalls in Britain’s own military capabilities.
INDUSTRIAL WEAKNESS British Intelligence has also pointed out in its latest report a «weakness» on the part of the Russian arms industry, which is not being able to respond to the high demand of the last year. Added to this are the «strategic and operational errors» on the battlefield.
The London experts also detect cracks in the Russian political elite and cite as an example a public reproach launched on Sunday by Putin to the deputy prime minister, Denis Manturov, responsible for the defense industry and accused of «wasting time».
«Production is below the demands of the Russian Ministry of Defense to maintain the campaign in Ukraine and restore long-term needs,» UK Intelligence services have pointed out.
