Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated Wednesday his invitation to his U.S. counterpart Joe Biden to visit the country to join the long list of international leaders who have visited Ukraine since the outbreak of the war.

«President Biden and I already meet occasionally. We have invited the president, I think he will be happy to visit Ukraine if he has the opportunity. That would be an important signal to support our nation,» Zelenski has said in response to a question from CNN.

However, whether or not Biden will eventually travel to Ukraine, President Zelenski wanted to emphasize Kiev’s gratitude to Washington for its continued dialectical support and also for the successive rounds of military supplies, which have been of «great help».

White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed last Friday that Biden will visit Poland between February 20 and 22, a few days before the first anniversary of the war on February 24.

There he will not only meet with the Polish President, Andrzej Duda, but will also hold meetings with the leaders of the so-called Budapest Nine, a group promoted by Romania and Poland, and which also includes Hungary, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Biden’s visit to Poland, a country bordering Ukraine, has sparked speculation that the president may take the opportunity to cross the border into Ukrainian territory to meet with Zelenski, a possibility that Jean-Pierre herself ruled out for the time being.
