Russia’s ambassador to the United States, Anatoli Antonov, has assured that Russia’s decision to suspend its participation in the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) was «the only right choice under the circumstances.»
Despite breaking with the treaty, Antonov has stressed that Russia continues to «comply with the stipulated quantitative restrictions,» according to statements to the official TASS news agency.
To return to the agreement, he added, «the United States must reconsider its aggressive anti-Russian policy.» «Our countries stood shoulder to shoulder, saving humanity from Nazism. This is what local officials should actively think about, and not about how to quickly enter our nuclear facilities,» he has added.
This Monday, U.S. officials warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to suspend its participation in START has not yet been officially notified.
Putin announced last Tuesday the suspension of the nuclear arms treaty signed with Washington, nuancing that it is not an «abandonment» of the agreement and claiming that the country «must be prepared to conduct nuclear tests if the United States carries them out first».
