The National Migration Service (SNM) of Panama has reopened on Wednesday the humanitarian corridor for thousands of migrants to cross from the province of Darien to Chiriqui and can safely cross the territory with a view to most of them to the United States.
The SNM details that these people will be transferred by bus from the temporary migrant reception center of San Vicente, in Darien, to Gualaca, in the province of Chiriqui. The Authority of Transit and Land Transportation (ATTT) will follow up to ensure that the transfer is supervised and safe.
Panama has reiterated its respect for international commitments and agreements on Human Rights and with respect to the policies of an orderly, legal and safe migration, according to the SNM communiqué.
So far this year, more than 89,000 people have entered Panama irregularly through the Darien Gap, a wall of lush jungle that separates the country from Colombia, one of the most inaccessible and dangerous places in Latin America, through which nearly 100,000 people crossed in 2021.
