Malaysian authorities have reported that more than 53,000 people have been evacuated due to flooding caused by heavy rains lashing much of the country.

The province of Johor, in the south of the country, is the most affected, so 49,500 people –14,200 families- have to take refuge in some of the 270 temporary relief centers that have been set up, reports ‘The Straits Times’.

The neighboring Pahang has registered 3,000 affected people –about 850 families–, while in Melaka there are 600 evacuees housed in six centers.

Despite the situation, the water has begun to recede in some areas and clean-up work has begun, so some families have been able to return to their homes.

However, more than 40 roads in eight districts are currently closed to all vehicles due to the impossibility of moving along them.
