The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has stated that there has been an »attempt» to kill the director of the National Protection Unit (UNP), Augusto Rodriguez.
Augusto denounced the contracting mafias in the UNP. Today they wanted to kill him,» Petro posted on his Twitter social network profile. »I ask the prosecutor to accelerate the investigations into these allegations, the evidence is in his hands,» he has requested.
In statements to Blu Radio, Rodriguez has confirmed that on Tuesday night his bodyguards mobilized against four individuals on a motorcycle who tried to attack him in front of his house, in Bogota. He also confirmed that he was unharmed.
The UPN is the state agency in charge of the protection of threatened people in Colombia, in August 2022 there were 8,114 beneficiaries, but Rodriguez, a man of confidence of the president and former member of the guerrilla organization M-19, has denounced irregularities in the rental of vehicles, with false armor and even being ceded for the protection of people who do not need them.
