Senate Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has been hospitalized Wednesday night after suffering a fall during a dinner held at a hotel in Washington.
His spokesman, David Popp, through a brief statement, has reported Thursday what happened, without offering further details of the 81-year-old Republican senator’s condition. McConnell stumbled in a hotel during a private dinner. He has been admitted to the hospital and is receiving treatment,» he said succinctly.
The fall took place at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Washington, according to sources accessed by U.S. media. McConnell, the longest-serving Republican leader in the Senate, already had to undergo surgery in 2019 after fracturing his shoulder at his home in Louisville.
Before attending the dinner, McConnell had been on Capitol Hill late into the night, helping to secure a victory for Republicans in a Senate vote to repeal the District of Columbia’s new criminal code that lowered minimum penalties for some violent crimes.
It is not yet known whether the accident will keep him out of the Senate, at a time when Democrats hold a slim 51-49 advantage and which has already resulted in Vice President Kamala Harris having to use her tie-breaking vote – as Senate President – after her colleague John Fetterman has been absent for health reasons.
