The UK Ministry of Defense estimates that the Ukrainian town of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine is now virtually divided between Russian and Ukrainian positions, with a front established on the river running through the center of the town, now turned into a »kill zone».
The Ministry’s assessment confirms Russian advances during the last four days, led by the Wagner mercenary group, which have led them to seize »control of most of the eastern part of the city».
In an effort to prevent the group’s advances, Ukrainian forces have blown up bridges across the Bajmuta River and barricaded buildings near the shore to repel any attempt to cross the waters.
In response, Russia »continues to try to outflank Ukrainian defenders through the north and south,» especially against supply lines, the ministry has made known on its Twitter account.
The British estimate confirms the announcement made in the last hours by the head of the organization, the oligarch Yevgeni Prigozhin, who considered the whole eastern part of the city as conquered, although he warned of the possibility of a Ukrainian counteroffensive in the next hours.
The President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, has called this week for the defense of the city at all costs, considering that the capture of Bajmut by Russia would mean the establishment of a »direct way» to access other cities in the east of the country.
