Former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence has lashed out Saturday at former President Donald Trump, asserting that »history will hold him accountable» for the assault on the U.S. Capitol.

»President Trump was wrong. He had no right to overturn the outcome of the (2020) election and his reckless words endangered my family and everyone in the Capitol that day, and I know that history will hold Donald Trump accountable,» said the former vice president during a speech reported by the US media.

Pence has described January 6, 2021, the date on which a violent mob of Trump supporters attacked the US Congress headquarters, as »a tragic day».

He has also stressed that »tourists do not injure 140 police officers while sightseeing», nor »break down doors to get to the Speaker of the House or issue threats against public officials».

Trump has already declared his intention to run to return to the White House in the 2024 elections, but Pence — who so far has not made a formal announcement — has hinted this Saturday of his interest in running.

»I will wholeheartedly and unreservedly support the Republican nominee for president in 2024…if it’s me,» he said, as reported by Bloomberg.

These statements are the most direct public criticisms made by Trump’s former vice president, holding him responsible for the acts committed, after describing how he had to hide, at the direction of security, from the assailants.
